YOUTH PROGRAMS

HDA is committed to reshaping the juvenile justice system, fostering successful community reintegration, and reducing gang involvement, thereby creating a positive ripple effect.

Youth Justice Program

HDA facilitates weekly Victim Awareness classes at two juvenile detention facilities in Los Angeles County with youth accused of violent crimes. The classes provide a safe space to process their wounds, explore factors that might have contributed to their actions and harm they’ve caused, and provide guidance on how to cultivate empathy for themselves and others.

Youth Accompaniment

Credible Messengers

As part of Los Angeles County’s Credible Messenger Program, our Wounded Healers team works seven days a week alongside Probation staff at two juvenile detention facilities. The HDA team members, who were once incarcerated in Juvenile Hall themselves, build consistent and compassionate relationships with youth who have been accused of violent crimes.

Credible Messengers are natural leaders who have successfully navigated their prior involvement in the justice system. They share similar life experiences with current justice-involved young people and are poised to have a transformative impact on an individual, family, community, and systemic level. At HDA, we refer to them as Wounded Healers.

Re-Entry Program

Through our innovative reentry initiative, HDA continues to provide support after young people are released from juvenile detention centers. Reintegrating into the community can be challenging for these individuals, so HDA launched a reentry pilot program in February 2023 to address their needs. Our services include family reunification, health referrals, job readiness training, vocational education, secure transitional housing, and strong mentorship. HDA ensures that each young person receives personalized support by addressing their specific risk factors and tailoring interventions to their needs.

Our reentry program is unique because it builds on the relationships our Wounded Healers have formed with the young people during their time inside. Youth are more likely to seek reentry support from a trusted source, and the comprehensive care provided by HDA’s team significantly increases the likelihood of a triumphant return to the community.

Family Support Groups

We are dedicated to providing family support groups for families with a loved one inside a Los Angeles County juvenile detention center. Our professional team offers a safe and nurturing environment where families can share their experiences, gain insights, and find strength in the community. We aim to foster resilience and promote healing for all members involved. Join us in this journey towards understanding and support.
